Phi Sigma Tau, Missouri Tau
International Honor Society in Philosophy

Letter of Invitation

Dear Potential Member:

The Missouri Tau chapter of Phi Sigma Tau was founded several years ago as a means for students with philosophical interests to get together for joint projects (for further information, please go to the Phi Sigma Tau--Missouri Tau homepage).

There are two ways of joining Phi Sigma Tau--Missouri Tau: either (1) as a full member of the international honor society in philosophy, which automatically confers full status in the local chapter; or (2) as an associate member of the local chapter, without affiliation with the international honor society.

(1) There are a few formal requirements for full membership in the International Honor Society of Phi Sigma Tau:

a. Candidates must have completed or be enrolled in at least six hours of philosophy classes.
b. The candidate's grade point average of philosophy classes must be at least 3.00.
c. The candidate must be in the top 35% of their class based upon academic performance.
d. The candidate must have completed at least three semesters of college study (at least second semester sophomore status).

If you wish to be considered as a full initiate in Phi Sigma Tau, please fill out the application form providing your name, student #, year of study (Sophomore, Junior), home and local addresses and phone numbers, username, and expected date of graduation. We will then verify with the Registrar that you meet the formal requirements of membership, and if so, we will send you an invitation to join Phi Sigma Tau.

(2) The only requirement for associate membership is an interest in philosophy. If you wish to be an associate member of the local chapter of Phi Sigma Tau, you can simply fill out the application form and return it to me along with your dues. Status of these members within the society is absolutely equal except when we vote infrequently on national issues proposed by the home office.

As with all things, there are membership dues: for Full membership, the dues are $35.00, which covers national dues for one year, a subscription to Dialogue, the honor society's philosophy journal, annual dues for the local chapter, and the printing of a certificate declaring your membership. In addition, if you would like an attractive lapel pin for Phi Sigma Tau, the charge will be $11.55. Associate membership dues are $5.00.

Sincerely,

Richard Field
