Zoology Careers and the NWMSU Program
Careers
Zoology is a very broad field, united only by the topic. It spans all
sizes of biology, from subcellular to population.
For some students, other NWMSU programs may be more appropriate. Those
interested in large mammals should consider the programs in Wildlife Conserva-
tion and Management. Those interested in species interactions should consider
the Concentration in Ecology, while those whose primary interest is cellular
or subcellular biology (regardless of the source organism) should consider the
Concentration in Cellular/Molecular Biology.
Many positions in zoology require advanced degrees. While graduates of
the Zoology Concentration may be accepted to graduate schools, the NWMSU Com-
prehensive Major in Pre-Professional Zoology is designed specifically for
graduate, medical, and vetrinarian schools.
While some zoologists are employed by zoos, most are employed by the
state or federal governments. Colleges and universities employ many zoolo-
gists; they expect varying combinations of teaching and research. Other zoo-
logists work for the National Biological Survey, National Fish & Wildlife Ser-
Service, state game or conservation departments, or national parks (see also
the pages on Ecology, Environmental, and Marine Biology). In all these fields,
knowledge of computers, writing, and statistics are important.
The_NWMSU_Program: B.S. in Biology, Zoology Concentration
The Concentration in Zoology is a broad-based biology degree with speci-
fic coursework in animal biology, including in invertebrate and vertebrate
zoology. The eight hours of zoology electives allow the student to specialize
in an area of interest.
Because many positions require advanced degrees, we recommend that
students pursue additional coursework, as their interests and abilities allow,
in the areas often required by graduate schools. These areas include especi-
ally computers, statistics, and foreign language.
If a student decides on an area to pursue in graduate school, we recom-
mend that student attend national meetings and read relevant journals to help
refine their interest. The acceptance rate is much greater for students who
directly contact potential graduate advisors.
