America
Reads Tutoring Program
The America Reads program focuses
on one-on-one tutoring to assist children in developing their
reading and writing skills. It is for students in grades first
through third. College students work with elementary students
at Horace Mann Laboratory School, Eugene Field Elementary School,
and St. Gregory School in Maryville. The college students are
part of the work-study program at Northwest Missouri State University.
Classroom teacher refer students to be part of the America Reads
program. Tutoring sessions last approximately thirty minutes
per session.
Tutors are trained to do a basic
guided reading lesson, with a picture walk, vocabulary introduction,
reading the story to/with the child, writing a short sentence
about the main idea of the story and drawing a picture about
the story. Tutors are asked to save one sentence worksheet each
month to be used to document each child's progress. They may
also write language experience stories and play letter and word
games to increase phonemic awareness and review literacy skills.
Research has shown that one-on-one practice with a fluent reader
is a critical factor in reading success. This is what the America
Reads program is about.
Academic
Improvement Minutes (A.I.M)
Academic Improvement Minutes (A.I.M.) is an academic
lab at Horace Mann Laboratory School. It is a program for at-risk
students in grades fourth through sixth. Teachers refer students
to the program based on what they observe during summer session. Mrs.
Hawk supervises the program with a reading tutor there at all
times. Volunteer college students will also be assisting students.
This program is set up to first assist students with their homework,
second to do drill and practice, and third to read. The program
is in the Horace Mann library from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Monday -
Thursday.
This is NOT a replacement for helping students at home. This
is always a requirement of ALL parents. Parents need to continue
to check assignment notebooks at home and make sure all homework
is complete.
