Ms. Serena Loving Instrumental Music Teacher
Instrumental Music at Horace Mann
allows students to begin to learn a musical instrument and become
part of a larger band program spread through the community.
The course is taught with instructors who also teach at Maryville
Middle School and St. Gregorys' Catholic School, which allows
students to become a part of the whole program that extends
through their entire secondary school career. Usually students
are asked to purchase their own instrument with the exception
of the very expensive instruments such as Tuba, Baritone, or
French Horn.
Students are allowed to select any
"band" instrument they wish with the exception of
percussion which has further prerequisites. Students are tested
on various instruments before joining band and therefore can
probably get a better understanding of the unique challenges
each instrument provides and can then choose an instrument based
upon personal preference and the success or frustration they
may have had on their first experience with each type of instrument.
Students will perform four times during the school year as 6th
graders. Due to the small class sizes usually associated with
the Horace Mann Band, three of these concerts are done as part
of the MMS program, and students are integrated into the MMS
6th grade band. The lone H.M. performance is at their graduation
ceremony at the end of the year.
