The fifth and sixth grade curriculum is based on the standards of the profession(NCSS, NCTM, NCTE, NSTA) as endorsed by National Councils of Teachers' Organizations in each of the subjects. The curriculum is aligned and linked to the Show-Me Missouri Knowledge and Performance Standards as well as the Grade Level Expectations. Our academic success is measured by standardized tests, Missouri Assessment Program (MAP), informal oral and written teacher-selected assessments, cooperative and performance events and tasks. Quarterly reports to parents include Directed Reading Assessments scores (DRA) as well as yearly Developing Writing Assessments scores. (DWA) In the curricular areas of Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies future teacher candidates are assigned to the classroom on a quarterly basis. As they plan and implement lessons the instruction includes small group as well as individualized instruction.

Reading and language arts are taught using a thematic and literature-based approach. Guided reading groups are organized into multi-aged groups that use before, during and after-reading strategies. The six traits of writing (6+1): ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and publication are used as the writing curricular focus. Spelling is based on the most frequently used writing priority words. Inquiry-based Mathematics and Science utilize the process-thinking skills approach. Primary and secondary documents form the foundation for our Social Studies lessons concerning democracy and freedom. The study of diverse cultures and ancient civilizations is accomplished through multi-aged research and cooperative projects

In all subjects children discover knowledge by answering essential questions that are developed from the grade level expectations. Manipulatives and artifacts are used to observe, record data and solve problems. Graphic organizers are used to build relationships among concepts. Technology is infused into all subjects through the use of computers, interactive Smartboard, document camera, internet, and software. Every sixth grader has a personal computer at their desk while each fifth grader has daily access to the twenty-five computers in the room. Each fifth and sixth grader has a handheld computer(PDA) at their desks as well.
