Humanities Course Descriptions

102 Western Civilization I: The Ancient World to 1500 (3 hours)
An introduction to the development of Western Culture from the Ancient World through the Renaissance.

103 Western Civilization II: 1500 to the Present (3 hours)
An introduction to the development of Western Culture from 1500 to the present.

104 The Humanities, the Eastern World (3 hours)
An introductory survey covering the literary, artistic, philosophical and religious traditions of selected Eastern cultures with special emphasis on China and Japan.

200 Special Offerings (1-4 hours)
Courses which are offered only one occasion or variable issue-oriented courses which have the content described in the title. Credit and prerequisites as announced.

241 Greek Civilization (3 hours)
A broad study of the major trends, events and personalities in Greek history until the decline of the Hellenistic monarchies before the rising of power of Rome. Special stress is placed upon those controlling concepts of Greek life which form the roots of our modern artistic and intellectual culture.

242 Roman Civilization (3 hours)
The study of the major trends, events and personalities in Rome’s history from its origin to its decline.

380 Special Topics in Humanities
A survey course in the humanities with topics to be selected by the instructor. May be taken more than once with approval of advisor.

400 Special Offerings (1-4 hours)
Courses which are offered only one occasion or variable issue-oriented courses which have the content described in the title. Credit and prerequisites as announced.

401 Senior Seminar (1 hour)
An intensive study of an issue in humanities of the student’s choice, in consultation with a faculty adviser, concluding with a research paper and a formal presentation.

409 Independent Study in the Humanities (1-2 hours)
Investigation of special problems in any area of study offered (humanities, classics, religion). Consent of instructor necessary.

500 Special Offerings (1-4 hours)
