With approximately 265 majors, Geography is one of the largest academic programs on the Northwest campus. Our students are pursuing academic interests in cartography, remote sensing, meteorology, urban/regional planning, travel and tourism, environmental management, international development, and demographic analysis. Our Geo-Technical Service enables our geography majors with career goals in technical mapping to gain hands-on experience. Students are paid by the hour while working on projects contracted from the private sector and local governments.
Our new Geographic Information Systems (GIS) minor, which is an interdisciplinary minor with Computer Science, has been highly successful with more than 100 students currently enrolled. This minor affords an excellent opportunity for employment in spatial analysis or computer fields. The web site of the Association of American Geographers gives more detailed information about these careers.

Students majoring in Geography are required to take a comprehensive test that is designed to assess graduates' understanding of fundamental physical and human geographic principles. Due to the comprehensive nature of this exam, students are expected and encouraged to retain course notes, beginning with their first geography class. Some students' degree requirements allow them to bypass the introductory geography course; however students are still tested on these basic geographic concepts on the final assessment. Therefore, students are encouraged to take advantage of the Geography Assessment Study Guide and introductory geography texts that are available in the library.
